The Mawgan Porth Area
Located midway between Padstow and Newquay with a west-facing beach full of golden sand, Mawgan Porth makes for a great base for your holiday in Cornwall.
Check out Mawgan Porth
Surrounded by beautiful scenery, Mawgan Porth and the pretty village of St Mawgan offer all you need for a visit to Cornwall. Facing west, the beach is sheltered by headland on either side. A small stream, perfect for rock pooling, runs down to the sea whilst caves await exploration. Acres of golden sand led to the beach being credited by The Times newspaper as one of the top ten holiday beaches in Cornwall. Surrounding beach cafés, bistros and shops mean there’s always somewhere to grab a bite to eat, hire surfboards or buy a bucket and spade.
Making the most of the beach
Mawgan Porth is usually less crowded than the nearby beaches of Watergate Bay and those in Newquay, making it popular with locals and surfers. RNLI lifeguards are on duty from Easter through to September and there are several surf schools providing lessons and equipment hire. The beach is dog friendly and there are numerous walks to enjoy.
Eating out at Mawgan Porth
For beachside eating, there’s a selection of cafés for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea as well as bistro, fish and chip or pizza options. Children are welcome and there’s the option of dining in one of the cafés, on one of the terraces or taking out and eating on the beach.
The village of St Mawgan is around a mile from the beach where there are further options, including several pubs.
Surrounding walks
The south-west coast path runs around the Cornish coastline and offers breathtaking views. The spectacular rock stacks at Bedruthan Steps are around a half-hour walk over the headland with the famous foodie port of Padstow around 9 miles when meandering via the beautiful beaches and bays on the way. Watergate Bay is only 2 miles away with Newquay a further 3 miles.
If you follow the river from the beach inland you’ll arrive at St Mawgan, known as one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Flower-covered shops, a village green and ford make it seem quintessentially English.
